I love reading, studying, and learning more about the faith - I have a shelf of books and Kindle full of ebooks to prove it - but few resources are more important in my library than my Catechism. Essentially, the online version of the Catechism, found on the USCCB website, allows you to read, search, and even print the resources you need. Sure, this may not be the latest news (the Catechism of the Catholic Church online version was officially released in June, 2012), but it is a great tool for those who have not used it yet. Whether you are a catechist standing at the front of the class, or a parent teaching your children about the faith, few resources are more important than the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the USCCB has made it available directly in your web browser. ![]() ![]() ![]() The synagogue massacre case has already spanned two presidencies. Controversies within the administration separated the two men further. His administration was fraught with conflict between the conservative wing, with which Taft often sympathized, and the progressive wing, with which Roosevelt grew increasingly close. Taft sought to reduce trade taxes, then a major source of government revenue, but the resulting bill was heavily influenced by special interests. In the White House he focused more on East Asia than Europe and also repeatedly intervened to establish or remove governments in Latin American countries. Taft faced little opposition to secure the Republican nomination for president in 1908, easily defeating William Jennings Bryan, the Democratic Party candidate, in the election. He turned down several offers of appointment to the United States Supreme Court, despite his personal ambition to become Chief Justice, because he believed his political work was more important. Taft became in 1904 the Secretary of War for Roosevelt, who personally chose him to be his successor in the presidency. President William McKinley appointed him in 1901 as civilian governor-general of the Philippines. He continued his rapid rise, being appointed Solicitor General and a judge of the Court of Appeals. He studied at Yale until 1878, then became a lawyer and then a judge under the age of thirty. Taft was born into a modest but extremely demanding family about success. ![]() ![]() ![]() ("If my book is good," Flaubert wrote to his mistress Louise Colet, "it will gently caress many a feminine wound: More than one woman will smile as she recognizes herself in it.") How a 30-year-old bachelor-one who led a mostly hermetic existence with his widowed mother in provincial Rouen in nineteenth-century France, agonized over every word, and read his work-in-progress aloud to himself as well as to a small audience of attentive male friends-came to invent a woman who is recognizably one of us, whose every gesture and passing thought strikes us as quintessentially female, is among the great artistic mysteries, a literary act of gender-bending if ever there was one. She is every woman who has felt that prosaic reality isn't quite what she bargained for, that marriage is a letdown, and that her specialness goes unappreciated.
